Barbaro euthanized...

Via bloodhorse.com
It is a sad day.
I only had my first taste of following horses and their races last May when i watched my first Kentucky Derby. As awesome as it was to watch on the television, it must have been hundreds or times moreso to watch in person!
I, like everyone else, had high hopes of having a triple crown winner going into the Preakness. Like everyone else, i would much rather have seen Barbaro simply lose... than to break down. It was horrifying to watch!
Now, maybe i'm still a bit naive, but i've been following Barbaro's progress through the endless procedures he has undergone since the Preakness. I believed he would pull through. I believed that he would provide veterinary science with invaluable information toward giving broken down horses full and pain-free lives.
Maybe he did provide some of that information. But i guess the complications were too much. Yes, it was the right decision to put him down... but that doesn't make it any easier.
